All About Roulette – Types, Strategies and Rules for Roulette
Roulette is the most simplified game as per the rules are concerned. It is often said in gambling that the simpler a game to understand, the more is the house edge. Roulette is for people who like something easy to play. 6-8 players can play at a time and place bets on a single number or grouping, and each player chooses different colored chips. These chips have no value on any other game than roulette. The chips are to be exchanged for regular chips before leaving the table at a casino.
Payout Formula
Formula to calculate payout is mentioned below:
Payout Formula=1/X (36-X) = (36/X)-1
X = square of the number player placed on its original bet.
The payout is calculated from the number 36, where there are 38 numbers (American Roulette Table) and 37 numbers (European Roulette Table), which take up the advantage of the house.
United States Rules
There are total of 38 numbers, with an additional “00”. The bets are placed as per the betting rules. The dealer releases the ball.
All over the U.S.A, the rules are the same except in the Atlantic City. The house edge is calculated as:
House Edge: 1/19 * 100 = 5.263%.
All the bets have the same 1/19 house edge, except the bets with five numbered (house edge is 7.29%)
Atlantic City Rules
The rule is to have a 00 on the Wheel. When a player places a bet on even money i.e., even/odd, 1-18, 19-36, red/black, he loses only half of the original bet, and if the ball stops on 0 or 00, The house edge is decreased by 50% eventually.
European Roulette (French Wheel)
The French wheel has one zero and similar rule like Atlantic City on bets with even money. This is known as “La Partage,” half of the money is returned to the player if he loses on even money bet. They can also imprison the bet rather than playing “La Partage” where the player would get all the money of his first bet if he wins on the next bet.
If the ball lands on 0, every casino follows different rules for that. Some casinos follow that the player will lose the entire bet, and some make it double imprisoned. Won bets would become single time imprison, or else it would be triple imprisoned, depends on casinos permit.
House Edge of Different Wheels
House edge is the percentage that the player loses to the house. The percentage lost decreases the chance of winning for a player and increases the casino’s chances of winning.
Let us consider a single number bet, the player would win if the ball stops on the number the bet is placed for. The chances of winning are only 1/38 percent, while the houses have 37/38 percent chances of winning.
Calculating it we get
35 * (1/38) + (-1) * ( 37/38 ) = -0.0526 which is 5.263%.
There is a number less in French Wheel thus house edge is:
35 * (1/37 ) + (-1) * (36/37) = -0.0270 which is 2.70%.
the zeros (single or double) put casinos on the safer side, and that house always has an advantage over the players, No matter what.
A player loses his entire outside bet if the ball lands on a green square. The payout is 35 to 1, which should be 37 to 1 on European tables and 38 to 1 on American tables.
Even when you win a single number bet, the house always keeps some amount from yours.
For inside bets, if you place a $1 chip bet for all the table numbers, you would be betting for $38, but you will win $36 and incur a loss of $2. House Edge is the same for all the numbers except 1-2-3-0-00, 7.89% on American Wheel.
House edge and Hold are different concepts. The hold is the percentage of money won or lost in comparison to the original bet. The hold report is 21-25%, as surveyed by the Atlantic City Control Commission of Casino. The hold is comparatively high than House Edge, which is only 5.26%.
Number Placement
People often think that the numbers on the roulette table are arranged randomly. But If you will take a closer look at the roulette table, you can notice that the sum of any part of the Wheel is almost equal to other parts of the Wheel. The Wheel is designed very carefully.
Wheel Tracking
People and books often tend to claim that the game is biased, and the Wheel generates sets of numbers more than others. It is true because old wheels are often biased and are commonly found in Europe. Modern wheels need to pass a hard test to be used in Casinos.
Ball Steering Phenomenon
One of the frequently asked questions whether the dealer can affect the wheel spin. People believe that the velocity of the ball released by the dealer, and the direction of the throw can generate the same number. But the answer is NO. The speed of the throw or any reason cannot affect the wheel spin. The ball generally hits a lot of numbers and rims, and it is difficult or almost impossible to predict the outcome because of too many obstacles.
